The total number of papers published by China Medical University’s staff in SCI/SSCI journals has increased significantly. On average, each professor at CMU publishes 3.29 papers annually in SCI/SSCI journals.

CMU ranked 8th among all of the universities in Taiwan for the total number of citations per article in 2008. CMU also ranked 6th in Taiwan for the average number of citations per article. Moreover, CMU was ranked 3rd in the nation for the average number of accepted journals’ impact factor. As well, CMU has already been listed as an excellent university by the Ministry of Education. The statistics have shown that CMU has made significant contributions in both quantity and quality to SCI/SSCI publications and has excelled in all aspects.

In the edition of Academic Rankings of World Universities (ARWU) released by Shanghai’s Jiao Tung University on August 15, 2013, China Medical University was ranked 446th among the world’s top 500 universities, and it was also ranked 132ndamong the world’s top 150 universities in the field of clinical medicine and pharmacy. Additionally, CMU was ranked 93rd in the Asia-Pacific region, 4th in Asia, and 1st among universities in Taiwan.

In the 2013–2014 UK Times Higher Education World Reputation Ranking, China Medical University entered the top 400 universities worldwide for the first time. It is the second time that China Medical University has been ranked among the top 200 universities in Asia and 1st among all private universities in Taiwan in a Western publication.

In 2013, China Medical University reached another new level based on the quality and quantity of its scientific publications. In that year’s National Taiwan University’s (NTU’s) rankings, CMU ranked 494th in the world and 2nd among all private universities in Taiwan.

CMU was ranked 406th by University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP) in 2013. CMU was also ranked 53rd in the university rankings of BRICS & Emerging Economics released by the Times Higher Education in the UK. CMU’s ranking surpassed that of other top universities in Taiwan.

From 2007 to 2013, the number of grants that were funded by the National Science Council for research projects by undergraduate students at CMU was 5th in Taiwan.

CMU has been a leading participant in the establishment of the Regional Research Ethics Center to protect the participants of clinical trials. With National Science Council’s instruction, CMU, along with National Taiwan University and National Cheng-Kung University, formed three Regional Research Ethics Centers responsible for the central, northern, and southern regions of Taiwan, respectively.

CMU has consistently shown remarkable research achievements in Chinese medicine. Indeed, CMU has published the greatest number of papers in SCI journals in the field of traditional Chinese medicine of any institution in the world. Since the papers have been indexed in the W, the number of citations in the fields of Chinese medicine, Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and integrative & complementary medicine have all ranked 1st in Taiwan. The total number of papers published in the field of Chinese medicine by CMU is 2nd in the world, 2nd in the world in the field of Chinese herbs, 8th in acupuncture, and 1st in the field of integrative & complementary medicine.

CMU has established several centers and core labs such as the Regional Research Ethics Center, the Biostatics Center, the Laboratory Animal Services Center, the Proteomics Core Laboratory, the BioBank, the Center for Clinical Medicine, the Metabolomics Center, etc., and still plan to establish a Stem Cell Core Laboratory, a Genome Sequencing Core lab, and a Center for Biomedical Imaging. CMU has already established ten special research centers including the Center for Genetic Medicine , the Natural Herb Research Center, the Center for Molecular Medicine, the Research Center for Lipoprotein, the Sex Hormone Research Center, the Center for Translational Medicine, the Center for Molecular Genetic Epidemiology, the Research Center of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and the Research Center for Biomedical Engineering. CMU integrates and increases from its academic base and promotes four centers to be a top research institution, and in doing so every aspect of the academics at CMU will be elevated.

The average number of the accepted journals’ impact factor ranks 3rd among the nation, and CMU has already listed as an excellent university founded by the MOE. The statistics have shown that CMU has a significant increase in both the quantity and quality of SCI/SSCI publications and excels in every aspect.

The number of publications by CMU staff has increased in recent years from 562 papers in 2007 to 934 in 2009 further to 1,461 in 2012. Not only has the quantity of published papers increased, but the quality of our publications has also greatly improved. Since 2008, published papers increased, CMU researchers have published more than 41 papers with an impact factor (IF) great than 10; furthermore, publications from CMU have been cited more than 2,151 times in 2009, with an average IF of 3.028. During 200 2007-2010, the average number of times that a CMU paper was cited was 2.91, meaning that CMU ranked 1st of all seven medical universities in Taiwan.

Our funding from the government (founding from Ministry of Education not included) increased from NT$300 million in the 2007 academic year to NT$610 million in the 2010 academic year, a 2-fold increase. CMU has also provided increased complementary funding on top of the government funding to support current research. As a rough estimation, the cost of each publication and each impact factor point was around NT$510 thousand and NT$190 thousand, respectively; government funds are utilized to the maximum in CMU.
